Heavy Metal Detox Smoothies
• 7 min. read
This cocktail is not only delicious, but also perfectly developed. It contains five key ingredients that work in synergy to remove heavy metals such as mercury, lead, aluminum, nickel, copper and cadmium from your body.
Toxic heavy metals are almost everywhere around us and are contained in things we come into contact with every day, such as aluminum cans and aluminum foil, batteries, metal containers, old paint and even in the food we eat. For example, pesticides and herbicides (which are difficult to completely avoid even with a strict organic diet) are a common source of heavy metals. As a result, most of us carry around heavy metals that have been with us most of our lives and that have accumulated deep within our cells.
Unfortunately, it is precisely these "old" metals that have remained in our body for a long period of time that pose the greatest threat to our health. For example, over time, toxic heavy metals can oxidize, damage surrounding tissues, and cause inflammation. They literally poison our body and can cause damage to almost every system and organ, including the brain, liver, digestive system and other parts of the nervous system. Toxic heavy metals are a huge burden on our immune system, making us vulnerable to various diseases.
Although all types of toxins are harmful, heavy metals pose a unique threat. Not only are they harmful in themselves, but they are also a form of neurotoxin (a poison that disrupts nerve function and confuses the immune system). Heavy metal neurotoxins can inflame and irritate our central nervous system (especially the brain), causing a host of symptoms such as memory loss, brain fog, fatigue and depression. Toxic heavy metals can also stimulate inflammation in the digestive tract, releasing poisons into our intestines as well. As if that wasn't bad enough, heavy metals also serve as a food source for viruses, bacteria, parasites and other pathogens in our body.
Heavy metals, for example, can serve as a nutrient medium for group A or group B streptococci, Escherichia coli, Clostridium difficile, Helicobacter pylori, as well as for the development of yeast cells. This can create an overgrowth of multiple bacteria in our gut, leading to a condition known as SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth). It is characterized by bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation (or both) and can lead to nutrient deficiencies. In addition, when viruses such as Epstein-Barr and herpes zoster feed on toxic heavy metals, it can cause symptoms such as numbness, stiffness, fatigue, anxiety, palpitations, tinnitus, dizziness and vertigo, as well as neck pain, knee pain , the feet, the back of the head and a number of problems that are often attributed to other causes.
In today's lifestyle, it is almost impossible not to ingest some of these toxic heavy metals, so in order to maintain our health, it is vitally important to get them out of our bodies before they cause further damage to our bodies. Fortunately, it's relatively easy to remove them from our bodies if we eat the right foods. Adding the following star team of foods to your diet and making sure to eat them regularly will help rid your body of heavy metals:
Spirulina: This edible blue-green algae pulls heavy metals from the brain, central nervous system, and liver, while also absorbing those extracted using powdered barley grass juice. Take 1-2 tsp. powder or 3-6 capsules mixed in water, coconut water or juice.
Barley grass juice powder: prepares the mercury so that it can be fully absorbed by the spirulina. This food herb has the ability to extract heavy metals from the spleen, intestinal tract, pancreas, thyroid gland and reproductive system. Drink 1-2 tsp. or 3-6 capsules mixed in coconut water or juice.
Fresh Coriander: Penetrates deep into hard-to-reach places in the body, drawing out metals that have accumulated in the past (so it's a great helper to release the mercury you've inherited!). Blend one cup into a smoothie or juice, or add to a salad or guacamole.
Wild Blueberries: Extract heavy metals from brain tissue, healing and repairing the “cracks” formed by oxidation after removal of heavy metals. It is important to consume wild blueberries (rather than cultivated) because they possess unique phytonutrients with special detoxifying abilities. The powerful antioxidants in wild blueberries help repair any oxidative damage left after heavy metals are removed. This is especially important for brain tissue - in fact, wild blueberries are the most powerful food for stopping or in some cases reversing the process that causes Alzheimer's and dementia. Eat at least one cup of wild blueberries daily or 1 tablespoon of wild blueberry powder.
Note: while cultivated blueberries are nutritious, they do not have the metal-extracting ability that wild blueberries have. Wild blueberries can be found in the frozen food section of most supermarkets.
Atlantic Dulce: In addition to mercury, this edible alga has the ability to bind to lead, aluminum, copper, cadmium, and nickel. Unlike other seaweeds, Atlantic dulse, by itself, is a powerful mercury remover. It reaches the deep hidden places of the digestive tract and intestines, finding the mercury, binding to it and not releasing it until it is removed from the body. Eat two tablespoons of dulse flakes daily, or the same amount of strips if in whole leaf form, or 1-2 droppers of Vimergy's non-alcoholic extract of Atlantic dulse.
Note: If you are concerned that dulse itself has mercury because it comes from the ocean, keep in mind that Atlantic dulse does not shed any mercury it may have. It traps the mercury as it passes through the body and even traps other metals it encounters on its way, thus carrying them out of the body.
Atlantic Dulce is an important part of the food team because it can linger near the "finish line" (ie, the colon), waiting for other foods that may have absorbed heavy metals along the way. It serves as an emergency backup, ensuring that any heavy metals that have reached the colon actually leave the body.
Today's smoothie recipe offers you a simple and delicious way to incorporate all five of these foods into your daily diet in just one serving. Drink this smoothie daily for optimal results.
